Cooler weather has arrived and I hear students planning their Halloween costumes in the library at lunchtime--it must be fall! The arrival of autumn means my reading list tends to get very atmospheric: contemplative books that I want to read with a cup of tea in my hand while the rain pours down outside and those that send a chill down my spine, making me wrap my fuzzy blanket tighter around myself. If you enjoy the spooky, cozy vibes of autumn, too, check out some of my reading suggestions below! Click on the covers to learn more.
This atmospheric, beautiful prose-laden fantasy about a black and white dream-circus is magical and totally perfect for the season. Definitely not for those who want an action-packed adventure, but if you appreciate magical writing and slower paced book, then this might be the perfect book to cozy up with on a fall night.
Like slasher flicks of the 80’s and 90’s? Check out this book about a woman who survived a massacre 22 years ago, and whose therapy group of fellow “final girls” has been targeted to be picked off one by one.
A cozy mystery series about a retired Sherlock Holmes and the smart young woman who becomes his pupil and sidekick when a villain enters the picture.
This is the perfect book to read in late October or early November, which is when the eponymous races take place. It's the time of year that you can feel winter looming, as the deadly murder horses that come out of the water in this book loom over a nearby island.
A wintery fairy tale set in snowy Russia that will make you happy to be indoors and cozy!
Turn your quiet night in into an epic adventure with the first book in Tolkien's classic fantasy trilogy. If you love it, there are two sequels and a prequel, plus so many movies to enjoy!
