June newsletter

You Belong @ the Library!

June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month, when the world's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer communities come together and celebrate the freedom to be themselves. The original organizers chose this month to pay homage to the Stonewall uprising in June 1969 in New York City, which helped spark the modern gay rights movement. In the spirit of diversity, inclusion, and the freedom to read, check out some books written by and/or featuring individuals from the LGBTQ+ community!

You can pick these titles up in the library, borrow them on Sora, or request them in your Summer Reading Grab Bag.

Not sure how to use Sora? Watch a short tutorial on the library's blog!

Your Summer Assignment: Read What YOU Like!

The importance of reading really can't be overstated. It doesn't matter what you plan to do with your life; reading will help you do it better.

This summer, make it a priority to find a way to enjoy reading. Comics, graphic novels, fiction, non-fiction, magazines, how-to books, electronic books, audio books--it doesn't matter. Reading is reading and it is so, so good for you.

Not sure what you enjoy, reading-wise? Relax with some great reads from a mini-library made just for you. Order a grab bag of library books to take home with you over the vacation!

Summer in the City

When you need a break from your book, get outside and see what Los Angeles has to offer!

Angels Walk LA is fantastic all-volunteer organization that shares the stories of Los Angeles through self-guided walking tours. I especially enjoy their Downtown options Bunker Hill and Union Station. If you'd like to stay closer to home, check out their walk through San Pedro!

If nature is more your thang, consider downloading the AllTrails app for Android or iOs. It provides a gigantic, searchable list of both curated and user-suggested hiking and biking trails from all over the U.S., so you can find a place to explore wherever you are. The app also traces your route and gives you information about the terrain!

Maybe you're interested in a getting a little culture this summer. If that's the case, you might enjoy Shakespeare by the Sea's 25th anniversary season, featuring Much Ado About Nothing and Romeo and Juliet. One is a comedy and one a tragedy, but both are romantic and totally free at neighborhood parks around the South Bay. My family and I are seeing Much Ado at Polliwog Park on Friday, July 22--pack a picnic and meet us there!

Last, but not least, did you know there are museums in Los Angeles that offer free admission every day?? Additionally, many museums offer a free day once a month. Spend some of your summer with the paintings, or the cars, or the costumes, or the sculptures, or the stars, or whatever it is that floats your boat!

Return Your Books!

Right now, students owe the library $9,340.09 in missing books and fees from previous years--this doesn't take into account the cost of all the materials that won't come back to the library this year. We simply can't afford to replace all of these books, so we desperately need you to turn them in.

If you've missed the weekly emails the library has been sending you, then find all the info you need about returning books in this document.
