March is Women's History Month
Check out a selection of books by and about courageous, visionary women in the library and online!
Turn In Your Books!
Next month, the much-anticipated Chalk Walk kicks off our end-of-the-year and graduation festivities. If you still have books from the 20/21 school year or before, you won't be able to purchase tickets to many of these exciting events--or even pick up your yearbook.
Please review your library record and start to take care of this task now, before you miss out on any of the fun!
Student Checkouts @ the Library
Click the book covers for more info!
February's most popular nonfiction title: Atomic Habits, by James Clear
Ordered specifically for a student who requested it a couple of years ago, this one has been a favorite on and off since then. The book says it offers "practical strategies that will teach you exactly how to form good habits, break bad ones, and master the tiny behaviors that lead to remarkable results."
It must deliver what it promises, to be so popular in our library!
February's most popular fiction title: Under Shifting Stars, by Alexandra Latos
Twins who used to be best friends struggle with the death of their brother and their changing relationship in this realistic YA novel. There's some good representation in this one: one twin is neurodivergent, the other is exploring their gender identity. Fans of Adam Silvera's books will like this one, too!
The Generosity of Our Saxon Family
Torrance Unified School District is generous with the money it sets aside for North's book and textbook budgets. Unfortunately, the district doesn't provide any funds for supplies. While the library is able to get what it needs to process and protect printed texts, there's no money left over for anything that helps build community or encourage creativity. The good news is that our Saxon family has come to our rescue!
Thank you to:
The NHS PTA, who have added an annual $500 library contribution to their operating budget. This year, some of this money will be buying supplies for students to make their own hand-bound books to fill with original poetry during National Poetry Month in April. The library is so grateful to President Diane Wang and her 2021/22 board! You can join the PTA on North High's website.
Ms. Bencomo, our teacher representative to the PTA who took my request for funding to the board.
Jennifer A., North High senior class president in 2001. She purchased the library some awesome do-it-yourself bookmarks from our Amazon Wish List. There is no better project for a library!
Our librarian's dad, who purchased the library a high-tech button-maker from our Amazon Wish List. How cool will it be for students to make wearable art?!?
Kenneth J., father of 9th grade student Luke, who purchased a number of fantastic games--Monopoly Deal, Sushi Go, chess, dominoes--for the library from our Amazon Wishlist. These are a great way for students to unwind and make friends before school and at lunch!
If you'd like to help support the library's commitment to fostering an environment that encourages intellectual curiosity, and independent, creative thinking in North's students, staff, and faculty, there are plenty of items currently on our Amazon Wish List--and we will add more as the need arises!
Library Closures
Because of special events and AP testing, the library will be closed part or all of several days in the upcoming weeks. Please see those dates below so that you can plan ahead and please pay attention to signage in front of the library, which will clearly announce when it is closed.
3/14: Closed at lunch.
3/30-4/1: Closed all day for Celebration of the Arts setup.
4/11-15: Open for library business only. This means checking books in & out and typing & printing documents. No hanging out at tables or on couches--we're setting up for Celebration of the Arts!
4/18-22: Open for library business and for you to enjoy the Celebration of the Arts displays. Come appreciate your fellow Saxons' works of creative genius!
4/29-5/19: The library will mostly be closed during this time due to AP testing. If signs say "closed," please do not come in. You can void the test of every person in the room if you enter. That means a lot of people who will be extremely angry with you.
The textbook window to the left of the library entrance will be open during most of these closures. The library will also reinstate our online book ordering procedure so you can continue to read for fun during our closures. Finally, there are a few computers and a printer that you are welcome to use in the College & Career Center (K1). Just be polite to Mrs. McKelvey when you visit!
Help Us Find Our Lost Books!
Library books need to be checked out to you before you remove them from the building so that we know where they are and how often they are used. If you've recently taken a book from the library without checking it out, please drop it in the book return as soon as you can. We'd be happy to check it out to you once we've crossed it off our lost-books list!
Follow Us!
@NorthHighLibrary only needs 47 more followers until we celebrate with hot chocolate and cider for all. Tell a friend to log on to Instagram and follow now--let's try to nail this down before it starts to get warm again!
