Lately, all the movies I've enjoyed on Netflix have turned out to be based on books. If you like to read the source material before you watch the show, then check out this list of books-turned-movies that have either just come out or will be premiering very soon.
The Case of the Missing Marquess, by Nancy Springer
The Netflix movie Enola Holmes is based on this book, which follows the younger sister of Sherlock Holmes on her quest to find her missing mother. The film has an all-star cast, including Mille Bobbie Brown (Stranger Things), Helena Bonham Carter (everything directed by Tim Burton), and Henry Cavill (The Witcher). I thought the movie was a lot of fun and the book is part of a series, so there are 5 more to read if you like the first one! The North High library has the book on audio through the Sora app or on Soraapp.com.
Rebecca, by Daphne DuMaurier
In this spooky classic, a young woman moves into her new husband's home only to find it guarded by a sinister housekeeper and haunted by his first wife. The Netflix version of the book, released in October, stars Lily James (Cinderella, Downton Abbey) and Armie Hammer (Call Me By Your Name, The Social Network). Print copy available in the library!
Hillbilly Elegy, by J.D. Vance
Vance's memoir focuses on the author’s experiences growing up in Appalachia and the issues with “hillbilly culture.” If you liked The Glass Castle, you may be intrigued by this one, too. Netflix will bring a film version, starring Glenn Close, Amy Adams, Gabriel Basso, and Haley Bennett, to television in November 2020. The print copy is available in the library, or get the audio and electronic version on the Sora app or at Soraapp.com.
Dune, by Frank Herbert
Warner Brothers will be releasing a film based on the world's best-selling science fiction novel in December 2020. The story takes place on a distant planet with only one resource, but it’s one worth killing for. The film features Timothée Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, and Jason Momoa. Watch the trailer here!
The print copy is available in the library, or get the audio and electronic version on the Sora app or at Soraapp.com.
Always and Forever, Lara Jean, by Jenny Han
The third and final installment of the To All the Boys series will be premiering on Netflix...well, sometime soon. The cast filmed the second and third films back to back, so COVID isn't delaying the release, but Netflix hasn't announced anything official.
The print copy is available in the library, or get the audio and electronic version on the Sora app or at Soraapp.com. Already read the whole series? We also have Jenny Han's Summer series (starts with The Summer I Turned Pretty) in print and electronic forms!
The Knife of Never Letting Go, by Patrick Ness
Chaos Walking, directed by Doug Liman, is set to premier in January 2021. It is based on The Knife of Never Letting Go, the first book in the Chaos Walking trilogy. The story is set in a dystopian world where all living creatures can hear one another’s thoughts. Everyone, that is, except women—because they’ve all died of the Noise germ.
The print copy is available in the library, or get the audio and electronic version on the Sora app or at Soraapp.com.
