December 2022 Newsletter

Updated: Mar 7, 2023

Swiftly approaching is that calendar moment when we nestle in for the longest night of the year. Winter evenings hold a special charm, whether we’re inside the cozy comfort of home or out walking the Strand, appreciating that we can visit the beach even in the winter, and admiring the multi-colored lights that cast a captivating glow over the cities of the South Bay.

I am grateful for all the opportunities I’ve had to interact with you over the year past.

You are my Saxon family, and the joy and satisfaction of doing my job derive from the people I serve. I am happy to be here for you and I look forward to seeing you as you stock up on books with which to pass the long nights of the holiday break. Fellow librarian Melanie Kozlowski, of Estes Park, Colorado, reminds us that reading “is the ideal antidote to the frenzy and stress that all too often accompany the holidays. Reading is calming, soothing, and leaves no mess to clean up. At the same time, it exercises the brain, stimulates imagination, and builds vocabulary.”

We at the North High Library wish you the best and brightest of whatever tradition you honor: Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Diwali, Advent, Solstice, Yule, or simply the peace of winter. May the charms of the season gladden your heart and lighten your burdens well into 2023!

-Ms. Masters

Get Ready for Finals

Semester 1 finals are the week of January 23, which means winter break is a perfect time to brush up on subjects that are giving you a problem.

Try Khan Academy for FREE lessons in nearly every subject, from algebra 2 and AP biology to U.S. history and computer programming. You can even study for the SATs here! Complete whole courses or jump around and do only the lessons you need--all for free!

If you're struggling to understand a book you're reading in English class, you can use the library's free literature study guides (login name: north password: saxons). The library also recommends Shmoop study guides for their great combination of pop culture and literary insight. And don't forget CSF tutoring in the library Monday-Thursday, 3:30-4:30 P.M.!

March Madness:

A Tournament of Books

In March 2023, the past year's most popular titles in the North High Library will go head to head in a championship to determine the 2022 Book of the Year. You don't have to read all of the books in the bracket to vote for the best, but the more, the better. Check out the titles here!

Reminders

  • Give a gift! Our ability to run fun activities and programs for students depends heavily on donations. If you think of the North High Library as you're doing your holiday shopping this year, please drop by our Amazon wishlist!

  • Follow us! For book recommendations & reviews, announcements, and event updates, follow @NorthHighLibrary on Instagram!

  • Turn in books! The date that your library books are due is always stamped in the front of the book. Please either return or renew books by this date. The library doesn't work for everyone when a few people horde the books! Seniors, this is especially important for you, as the spring is full of senior activities from which you may be removed if you owe the library materials or fees. Not sure what's on your library records? You can look it up yourself from home or school!
