May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Each year, the U.S. designates May to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and its impact on the well-being of all Americans. Talking about mental health and illness can be hard, but we are stronger together, and one of the most empowering things about speaking up is the knowledge that you are not alone, no matter how you may feel otherwise. The North High Library is here for you and is committed to providing all Saxons with the help and support you deserve.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) offers a comprehensive list of resources for Los Angeles residents struggling with everything from suicidal thoughts and panic disorders to addiction and PTSD. It can be overwhelming if you need immediate help, though, so here is a quick way to reach out:

Crisis Text Line

Text HOME to 741-741

A free, confidential, 24/7 support line for those in crisis in the U.S. Within minutes, a live trained crisis counselor will answer your text. It’s been instrumental in helping millions of people, especially teens. www.CrisisTextLine.org

For a sampling of books on the topic of mental health, come to the library after May 16 or visit our homepage and scroll down until you see the book covers!

Also in May...

...the United States and the North High Library observe Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, which recognizes the contributions and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States.

May is also designated Jewish American Heritage Month in the U.S. During this month and every month, the North High Library honors the more than 350-year history of Jewish contributions to this country.

You can find a sampling of books by and about individuals of Asian, Pacific Islander, and Jewish descent in the library (visit after May 16) or on the "Books" page of our website.

In Loving Memory

Please join your fellow Saxons in a celebration of the life of Ronda Massey, North High math teacher for over twenty years, at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, May 7, in the North High gym.

Playing With Words

In honor of National Poetry Month, students made tiny magnetic masterpieces and blackout poems in the library during March!

Return Your Books

Begin clearing your library record before the last week of school. This is the way.

Not sure what you need to turn in? See the helpful signage on the textbook window or visit our blog for directions.

Library Closures

Because of special events and AP testing, the library will be closed part or all of several days in the upcoming weeks. Please see those dates below so that you can plan ahead and please pay attention to signage in front of the library, which will clearly announce when it is closed.

  • 4/29-5/16: The library will be closed during this time due to AP testing. The security of the test is very important, so please do not enter the library if you are not taking a scheduled AP exam.

  • 5/30: The library--and the rest of the school--will be closed for Memorial Day

REMEMBER! Directions for checking out and returning books, and for using computers and printers are on the big whiteboard in front of the library and, even when you can't come inside, we can usually help you at the textbook window. Don't be afraid to stop and ring the bell!
