November is a time to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories of Indigenous Americans and to acknowledge their historical and ongoing contributions to the country. Heritage Month is also an opportune time to learn about tribes, the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.
Check out PBS' Heritage Month coverage and drop by the library (or its website) to browse books written by and about Indigenous Americans. You can also celebrate in the library at lunch on Friday, November 19, when Ms. Whorley leads an activity on Native American symbolism. It involves tattoo markers, so you definitely don't want to miss it!
Would you, your class, or your club like to host an educational event in the library? Please email Ms. Masters your proposal at masters.caitlin@tusd.org!
The library is
more than books!
The North High Library's mission is to provide opportunities for students and staff to become effective users, creators, and distributors of information, and to foster an environment that encourages intellectual curiosity and independent, creative thinking. Certainly our collection of almost 17,000 print books helps us fulfill that mission, but in our current technological age, books alone aren't enough--so books are not all that the library offers! We also have bookmarks to color, puzzles to put together, and games (both regular and giant-sized) to play, among other things. If you'd like to support the library's mission, you can help us extend our offerings with a gift from the library's Amazon wishlist.
COVID protocols
COVID cases are on the rise again in Los Angeles County. The county, the school district, and North High all have safety protocols in place to minimize the effects of this pandemic. In the library this means:
A maximum of 60 people inside at a time
Respecting signs on tables and chairs which indicate where to sit in order to maintain social distance
Sitting in an appropriate seat and avoiding wandering around, especially in groups.
Wearing masks which completely cover the nose and mouth at all times--this means no eating or drinking inside, which has always been the library's policy
I want you to enjoy your time in the library and I know that is difficult to do when the librarian is harassing you about your mask and where you're sitting. I don't enjoy doing it, either. Please do both of us a favor and follow our COVID protocols without having to be asked.

No-Stress Book Club
Read what you want and come when you can! The theme for November is retellings--that is, books that give a new spin to an old story. We will meet to discuss our reading on Wednesday, December 1. For more information and book recommendations, visit the library's website.
Reminders:
Library closure
The library will be closed all day on Friday, November 12. Please plan ahead so that this doesn't cause you too much inconvenience. Don't forget that the College and Career Center in K1 has a printer you can use, but only a couple of computers, so lines can be long. Don't wait until the last minute to print out your assignments!
Follow us!
You'll find book recommendations, read-alouds, raffles and contests, school news and library happenings on our Instagram and TikTok. When we hit 284 Instagram followers, we'll celebrate with hot chocolate and apple cider for all--we only need 82 more! We are also looking for great social media content. If you think you can make the library go viral, email Ms. Masters your idea at masters.caitlin@tusd.org!
