Moving Forward Together! Celebrating Women Who Educate & Inspire

March is Women’s History Month, and this year’s theme, Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations, highlights the incredible impact of women who educate, mentor, and lead. From groundbreaking teachers to trailblazing activists, women have long been at the forefront of shaping future generations.

Throughout history, women like Mary McLeod Bethune, who founded a school for Black students that later became Bethune-Cookman University, and Malala Yousafzai, who continues to advocate for girls' education worldwide, have demonstrated the power of knowledge and the importance of lifting others up. Teachers, librarians, and community leaders play a crucial role in ensuring that people of all ages have access to opportunities and encouragement to pursue their dreams.

At North High’s library, we’re celebrating this theme with book displays featuring inspiring women in history, literature, and STEM fields. Whether you’re interested in reading about real-life educators and leaders or discovering fictional heroines who challenge the status quo, we have something for you. Join us in recognizing the women who have shaped history and continue to pave the way for future generations. Stop by the library to explore our collection, get inspired, and keep moving forward—together!

Recent Happenings

The library has been BUSY this past month! Check out some photos below.

Pictures 1 & 2: The Japanese American National Museum brought a mobile exhibit about education in the United States' Japanese concentration camps during WWII. In these photos, Mr. Glaser's students examine such artifacts as year books, report cards, and lesson plans. All U.S. history students got to participate in this experience!

Pictures 3&4: Mrs. Galullo's class learns how to navigate the library's online databases. Mr. Mingham's classes also visited the library for assistance with their research projects.

Picture 5: Mrs. Galullo's class enjoys a book tasting, where students get to sample just a little bit of a whole bunch of books and hopefully find something that intrigues them.

Picture 6: Mr. Krumpe's class speed dates some books! Like book tasting, but Valentine's Day themed. Over the past month, 10 English classes and 2 algebra 1 classes--equaling over 400 students--came in for book tastings in February!

Monday Fun Days!

The library is a purpose-driven space, where you go specifically to quietly read, study, or relax, offering a rare opportunity to focus during busy times like break and lunch.

It’s also a place to build community. Whether you're working on a group project or discussing books, we encourage collaboration and connection. To celebrate this, we’ve introduced Monday Fun Days! Every Monday the library is open, we’ll have a new lunchtime activity for you and your friends to enjoy. Upcoming Fun Days:

3/3: The library will only be open at lunch for printing and book checkout--no Fun Day today.

3/10: Board & card games, including Sushi Go, Jenga, Connect 4, Uno, mancala, and chess

3/17: Pin-back button making. There will be some color designs ready to go and some in black and white that you can color yourself. There will also be blank templates for you to create your own button designs. If you'd like to make a digital design in advance, print it, and bring it with you, then you can make a copy of this Canva template and use it to create your masterpiece!

3/24: The library will only be open at lunch for printing and book checkout--no Fun Day today.

3/31: Book making. Create a small notebook or journal with a custom cover!

Please be aware that:

  • Your school ID may be required to check out supplies or materials. Make sure you have it with you on Mondays--and every day!

  • Ms. Masters and Mrs. Clarkson will still be expecting your usual excellent library behavior: low voices, four students to a table, appropriate use of the library's space and supplies, etc.

  • Because supplies are finite, we will be limiting library attendance more than usual on Monday Fun Days. If you aren't interested in participating in the day's activity, please consider finding someplace else to hang out for lunch so those who are interested can get in!

Pro Tip For Teachers: Stop Grading So Much!

Is grading taking over your evenings and weekends? Research suggests that traditional grading habits—like marking every assignment and giving extensive feedback—may not be as effective as we think. Discover why targeted feedback leads to better learning, how streamlining grading can reduce stress for both teachers and students, and why alternative assessment methods may provide a clearer picture of student progress. Library Closures

  • Monday, 3/3: The library will be open only at lunch and only for printing and book checkout. Tutoring will happen after school as usual.

  • Monday, 3/24: The library will be open only at lunch and only for printing and book checkout. Tutoring will happen after school as usual.

For service when the library is closed, please visit the textbook window. And remember that the College & Career Center (K1) has computers and a printer for your use. Please talk to Mrs. McKelvey for her schedule.

We sometimes have to close the library unexpectedly and without notice, which we realize is inconvenient, but is also unavoidable. Whenever the library is closed, there will be a sign in front of the doors saying so. Please do not walk by this sign and enter the library when it's closed.
