November is Native American Heritage Month
Also known as American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month, November is when we honor the Indigenous people of what is now the United States of America, and celebrate the many contributions they have made to this country.
The library acknowledges that North High exists on the ancestral land of the Gabrielino-Tongva people, who continue to call the Los Angeles area home. Our presence here compels the North High Library to educate students about Native American peoples and cultures, and to ensure that the library’s collection features materials which accurately represent the varied experiences of Native American peoples.
This month, consider reading this brief introduction to the Gabrielino-Tongva people. You can also check out a small sampling of the library’s books written by and about Native American individuals on our website or in the library!
Library Project: Diversity Audit
The literary canon is traditionally filled with books written by and about straight, white men. But libraries are for everyone, and the content of their books should accurately reflect the communities they serve. In order to better understand our library collection, and assess the extent to which it represents both North High and the wider community, we are undertaking a diversity audit.
During this process, Ms. Masters and Mrs. Clarkson will go book by book through the entire fiction collection. For each title, they will chart main characters who are not straight, white, and male, including (but not limited to!) characters who are female, gender fluid, or nonbinary; characters of non-white racial and ethnic backgrounds; characters with disabilities; neurodiverse characters; and LGBTQ+ characters. Then they'll go back and do the whole thing over again for the authors of these books.
The results of this audit will assist the library in purchasing book which make it a place that truly represents our North High community!
Come Check Us Out!
There’s no more need to know a specific title and author to find a book in the North High Library. Our fiction collection is now organized in sections like short stories, romance, fantasy, and more. Just pick your preferred genre, and start browsing for your next read!
Library Closures
The library will be closed before school and at lunch on Thursday, November 2.
Unfortunately, there are also times when the library has to close at the last minute and without warning. If the library is closed, there is always a sign saying so immediately in front of (or on) the door. Please don't walk by these signs without reading them. And don’t forget that the College & Career Center (K1) has computers and a printer!
