Black History Month
Each February, the United States and North High School celebrate Black History Month to honor the invaluable contributions, resilience, and achievements of Black individuals throughout history. It's a time to recognize and appreciate the struggles and triumphs of Black communities, from their pivotal roles in shaping societies to their enduring cultural legacies. By highlighting the accomplishments of Black leaders, artists, activists, scientists, and everyday heroes, we acknowledge their pivotal roles in shaping our collective history and a more inclusive future. Black History Month serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight for equality and justice while inspiring us to continue learning from the past and working towards a more equitable society for all. Love is in the Air!
Valentine's Day is February 14. If you've got that loving feeling, then you're sure to enjoy the romance in these books. If not...well, we have books for you, too.
Sign up for Saxon Time in the library on February 8 & 9 to make a Valentine's Day card for someone you love. On Wednesday, we'll give you the supplies to make a simple greeting card, and on Thursday, Mrs. Clarkson will teach you some basic calligraphy so that you can write a message on the card you made the previous day!
Finally, on Monday, 2/12, drop by the library before school, at break, at lunch, or after school to participate in our Hidden Hearts Hunt. Find one of several hearts hidden around the library and win a little prize (that you might even decide to give away to a loved one).
Research and
Essay-Writing Resources
It seems like quite a few teachers are assigning research papers and essays as their final projects of the first semester, so here is a reminder of some resources the library offers to make the research and writing process a little easier on you.
This very blog has a whole section on research, including tutorials on how to write a research question and how to format your paper in APA style. I'd be happy to make more of these tutorials if they'd help you. You can email me at masters.caitlin@tusd.org to request a topic!
The online research section of this website features a ton of places to find sources that are appropriate for high school research papers. Make sure to read the descriptions so that you can pick ones that make sense for your particular project.
ProQuest, one of the databases provided to you by the North High Library, has a great set of tutorials that walk you through your entire research project. Of course, you don't have to watch them all--you can just check out the ones on topics you're struggling with. If it asks, our username is northhs and the password is NorthHS!1. Britannica School has something similar.
Purdue University has an incredible online writing lab with so many resources to sift through that it's kind of overwhelming. You can look through the topics on the left hand side of the screen, but some that might be especially helpful are "Common Writing Assignments," "Best Practices to Avoid Plagiarism," and "Evaluating Sources."
There are lots of citation generators out there, but I really like the one at Scribbr.com. If you create a free profile on the website and sign in before you start creating citations, it'll save all those citations for you. When you get to the end of your project, you just copy them all and paste them into your works cited list!
Of course, you are welcome to drop by the library before school, at lunch, or after school and I will personally help you. Writing is my specialty and I bet I can address your questions in less than five minutes!
Lunchtime in the Library
The library is your haven away from the hustle and bustle of the quad, offering a peaceful space for studying and relaxation during lunchtime. As much as we'd love to welcome everyone, there are times when we have to close our doors, typically towards the end of the period. This closure occurs when we reach our legal limit of 74 students, or when our dedicated library staff feels that the crowding and noise levels compromise the library's tranquil and focused atmosphere. Once the doors are closed, they will remain so until the end of the lunch period.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in ensuring that our library remains a serene retreat for everyone. Thank you for making our library experience enjoyable and conducive to learning.

Although we try to announce library closures in advance via the newsletter and our social media, there are times when the library must close unexpectedly and without warning. When we are closed, we will always post a sign at the library doors saying so. Please don't walk by these signs without reading them.
Mes de Historia Afroamericana

¡El Amor Está en el Aire!
El dÃa de San ValentÃn es el 14 de febrero. Si tiene ese sentimiento amoroso, seguramente disfrutarás del romance con estos libros. Si no... bueno, también tenemos libros para tÃ.
Apúntate para el Saxon Time en la biblioteca los dÃas 8 y 9 de febrero para hacerle una tarjeta del DÃa de San ValentÃn para alguien que amas. El miércoles te daremos los materiales para hacer una tarjeta de felicitación sencilla y el jueves la Sra. Clarkson te enseñará algo de caligrafÃa básica para que puedas escribir un mensaje en la tarjeta que hiciste el dÃa anterior.
Finalmente, el lunes 12 de febrero, pásate por la biblioteca antes de las clases, durante el recreo, durante el almuerzo o después de clases para participar en nuestra Búsqueda de Corazones Ocultos. Encuentra uno de los varios corazones escondidos en la biblioteca y gana un pequeño premio (que incluso podrÃas regalarle a un ser querido).
Investigación y Recursos para escribir ensayos
Parece ser que algunos profesores están asignando trabajos de investigación y ensayos como proyectos finales para el primer semestre, por lo que aquà te recordamos algunos recursos que tiene la biblioteca para facilitar el proceso de la investigación y redacción.
 Este mismo blog tiene una  sección completa sobre investigación, que incluye tutoriales sobre cómo escribir una pregunta de investigación  y cómo formatear el artÃculo al estilo APA. La Universidad Purdue tiene un increÃble laboratorio de escritura en lÃnea  con tantos recursos para ver que resulta abrumador. Puede consultar los temas en el lado izquierdo de la pantalla, pero algunos que pueden ser especialmente útiles son ""Tareas comunes de escritura, ", "Mejores prácticas para evitar el plagio " y "Evaluación de fuentes ".
Existen muchos generadores de citas, pero a mà me gusta mucho el de Scribbr.com Si creas un perfil gratuito en la página de la red e inicias sesión antes de comenzar a crear citas, Scribb guardará todas esas citas. Cuando llegues al final de tu proyecto, ¡simplemente cópialas todas y pégalas en tu (página de) lista de las citas del proyecto!

Hora del Almuerzo en la Biblioteca
La biblioteca es un refugio lejos del ajetreo y del bullicio del patio y ofrece un espacio tranquilo para estudiar y relajarse durante la hora del almuerzo. Por mucho que nos encanta darles la bienvenida a todos, hay momentos en los que tenemos que cerrar las puertas, generalmente hacia el final del perÃodo. Tenemos que cerrar cuando alcanzamos nuestro lÃmite legal de 74 estudiantes, o cuando nuestro dedicado personal de la biblioteca siente que el hacinamiento y los niveles de ruido comprometen la atmósfera tranquila y concentrada de la biblioteca. Una vez cerradas las puertas, permanecerán asà hasta el final del periodo del almuerzo.
Agradecemos su comprensión y cooperación para garantizar que nuestra biblioteca siga siendo un refugio tranquilo para todos. Gracias por hacer que nuestra experiencia en la biblioteca sea agradable y propicia para el aprendizaje.

Aunque intentamos anunciar con antelación cuando estará cerrada la biblioteca a través del boletÃn y de nuestras redes sociales, hay ocasiones en las que tenemos que cerrar la biblioteca y sin previo aviso. Cuando tengamos que cerrar la biblioteca, siempre colocamos un cartel en las puertas de la biblioteca diciendo que está cerrada. Por favor, no dejes de leer los carteles que colgamos.
