After School Help For Everyone!

Need some help understanding the main concepts of a difficult class? North High students in the California Scholarship Federation are in the library Monday-Thursday from 3:30-4:30 P.M. to tutor you in all subjects.

As an alternative, the Torrance-South Bay YMCA will be hosting a Youth Institute on-campus in room I2 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, from 3:30-5:30 P.M. This program is free and offers a computer lab, access to graphic design and filmmaking software, homework assistance, and college prep help.

Offsite, the North Torrance Branch library on Yukon & Artesia has a Homework Center, which is open during the library’s regular business hours and offers in-library laptop lending; high-speed, high-quality printing; dedicated seating; and STEM kits to check out.

If you prefer studying in your jammies, I've got two options for you! The state of California offers learners of any age free, on-demand tutoring through their local libraries. The program offers assistance (in several languages) in core K-12 subjects. Adult learners can also access writing assistance, citizenship resources, and other tools. You can use this online resource via smartphone, tablet or computer, so long as you're in the state of California!

Varsity Tutoring is another online tutoring platform which offers 24/7 on-demand chat tutoring, on-demand essay reviews, SAT & ACT test prep classes, college & career readiness prep, and more--all for free! Use your school email to log in.

Reading Must Be Fun...

...because there are an awful lot of North High students doing it! The statistics to the right only include books from our print collection--no textbooks or digital titles here.

Why the decrease in nonfiction checkouts this year, though? Ms. Masters has a couple of thoughts:

  1. We have been busy updating and reorganizing the library's nonfiction so that it's easier to find newer titles with relevant information. Unfortunately, things have to get worse before they get better and the nonfiction shelves are a little difficult to navigate right now. Please ask your library staff if you need help finding something--that's what we're here for!

  2. We just don't have enough nonfiction books on the topics that interest you. To request that we add a specific title or more books on a general topic to our collection, please use this form or visit the library for a print version!

Celebrate!

Hispanic Heritage Month continues until October 15. Visit the library or its website for books by and about people of Hispanic and Latino heritage!

Of course we don’t want to forget Halloween. If you relish this spooky time of year, then you’re sure to love the Horror & Suspense section in the library. Drop by to explore or check out some of our featured tales of terror on the library’s website.

Lunchtime in the Library

Our library is meant to be a place to escape from the chaos of the quad. To maintain its tranquil atmosphere and ensure the safety of all staff and students, we have a policy in place: Once the library reaches its maximum capacity during lunch, we close its doors to students for the remainder of the period. We understand that this may be inconvenient at times, but it's crucial to preserve the library as a space where you can focus on your studies or enjoy a good book without disruptions. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in making our library a comfortable and safe space for everyone!

Library Closures

  • Wednesday, 10/9: Closed all day, including break and lunch. Tutoring will happen after school, as usual.

  • Friday, 10/25: Open only at lunch and only for printing and book checkout.

  • Tuesday, 10/29: Closed all day, including break and lunch. Tutoring will happen after school, as usual.

  • Wednesday, 10/30: Open only at lunch and only for printing and book checkout. Tutoring will happen after school, as usual.

  • Thursday, 10/31: Closed all day, including break and lunch. Tutoring will happen after school, as usual.

Please plan ahead for these closures and remember that the College and Career Center (room K1) has computers and a printer, too!

Unfortunately, there are also times when the library has to close at the last minute. If the library is closed, there is always a sign saying so immediately in front of the door. Please don't ignore these signs and please don't come into the library when we're closed.
